Colchester South Junction Renewal

Stuart Maher Limited's Contribution

Colchester South Junction was originally designed and installed in the 1960’s with a canted transition through it. This arrangement is very difficult to maintain for both line, level and cant and puts extra loads on the components.

When the junction came up for renewal, Network Rail asked Scott Wilson to design the junction on a flat, zero canted curve to keep the junction off of a transition. The first design had some large slues into the existing turnout on the Up Passenger Loop which Network Rail did not want as there was insufficient time in the possession to do extra work.

Stuart Maher Ltd were asked by Scott Wilson to revisit the junction design to see if the slues into the Up Passenger Loop could be reduced and still keep the junction on a flat curve.

Consequently Network Rail's remit was successfully completed with minimal slues to the Up Passenger Loop and the track renewal went ahead as planned.
